Broulee Coastal Renovation Design

This project is a joyous re-imagining of a simple beach-house. Beautifully crafted by Peter Jirgens of EarthBuild, sited in Broulee on NSW south coast, this comprehensive renovation has created the contemporary dream home the owners hoped for. It is difficult to recall the original concrete block and fibro shack that previously perched on this sought after site.

While the generous block allowed for some width to be added, the overall floor plan was kept largely intact. This meant the budget could be carefully directed at some unique designer features including the finely crafted staircase which sings in the new double height entry volume, and various other beautiful timber elements that bring a unique style to this peaceful, coastal home.

The upper-level living space is a light-filled volume opening wide to decks at both front and rear. The ceiling is gently vaulted with the original low-pitched gabled roofline – a hallmark of this era of beach house.

 

Cross- and stack-ventilation are maximised, while quality glazing elements keep the home snug through cooler months. This contributes to the reduced running costs and environmental impacts of this “recycled” dwelling. Colorbond cladding is an economical choice and ensures minimal maintenance to this upper level.

To keep the renovation affordable within the clients’ budget, it was necessary to give careful consideration to the supporting structure on the lower level, working within the existing grid of concrete block and steel post frame. The under-croft has been transformed into the private main bedroom suite with a garden resort-feel.

 

Generous studio and storage areas were retained and revamped, as was the beach-house laundry with outdoor shower area. A carport was integrated within the ground level renovation, and care was taken for these various service areas to be discretely accessed without intruding on main bedroom suite. Hardie Linea weatherboard style cladding offers simple and affordable beach-house style.

It is very easy to imagine yourself peacefully relaxing in this beautiful, light-filled, coastal home.
