3D Building Scanning. The Future of Building Design

Technology within the building design and construction industry is evolving rapidly, and one of the exciting advancements we’re seeing is the rise of 3D building scanning using LiDAR technology.

LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging. It’s a technology that uses laser light to measure distances and create highly accurate 3D models of objects, buildings, and landscapes.
A LiDAR scanner sends out thousands (sometimes millions) of laser pulses per second. These pulses bounce off surfaces—such as walls, floors, roofs, trees, or terrain—and return to the device sensor. By measuring how long it takes for each laser pulse to return, the system calculates the exact distance to that surface.

All these measurements combine to create a dense cloud of points in 3D space, known as a point cloud. Each point represents a precise location in the real world.
3D Building Scanning for Better Design Accuracy
The team at PdD are always looking for ways to improve accuracy, efficiency and outcomes for our clients. That’s why we’re investing in equipment that allows us to bring 3D laser scanning and digital site capture directly into our design workflow.
We’ve been familiarising ourselves with the new 3D scanning tool this week, and seriously, it’s a game changer!
For building designers, accuracy is everything. When designing renovations, extensions or new builds, small measurement errors can turn into costly variations onsite.
Instead of relying solely on manual site measurements, tape measures and assumptions, we can now dramatically improve the accuracy of as-built documentation, renovation planning and construction verification.
What This Means for Our Clients
· More accurate and efficent renovation design processes
· Precise existing building measurements
· Reduced risk of construction variations
· Better coordination with engineers and builders
Integrating LiDAR scanning and 3D modelling technology into our workflow means we can design with greater confidence and clarity for our clients from the very beginning. We believe this will be another standard that sets our business apart.
