Broulee Beach Shack Renovation

This delightful coastal renovation of a classic Broulee beach shack brings Mid-Century modern back to life!
Strong timber details, crisp lines and rich exterior colours successfully upstage the original concrete blockwork lower level of this beach shack, drawing the eye to the generous welcome given by the upper level where the main living takes place.

Many original elements of this charming shack have been re-created, faithfully restoring its playful spirit. A light-weight, external timber stair leads visitors up to the wrap-around deck which has a boardwalk flavour and is embraced by the generous eaves. A passer-by can’t help but want to be on that deck with friends or a book, a drink, a cuppa.

Inside, the renovation has inserted a neat galley kitchen and retained the Mid-century built-in dining alcove. These are banked along one side, divided by from the living room by a bar-topped half-wall. Double-glazed sliding doors and windows on three sides of the lounge open wide to the covered hardwood deck and small-town coastal views.

Solar-passive design principles guided this renovation, as they do all our projects; double-glazing was installed, and consideration was given to airflow through this affordable Broulee renovation. To a degree, however, the visual style of this little gem took precedence in the design of this renovation. The roof form and expansive glazing were largely predetermined and much-loved features of this Mid-century coastal home.
